Pensioner Maria Zlatic lives in a Serbian village. She has turned 86. None of her relatives are left, and it seemed like life had no other surprises. But recently something happened that is now being talked about far beyond the borders of the country.
When the woman was 20, she fell in love with a young man named Momcilo Zlatic from the neighboring village. Their romantic relationships developed rapidly, and the lovers soon got married.
In 1956 the couple moved to Australia in search of a better life. They were gradually getting used to the new life, when suddenly Maria found herself facing numerous difficulties.
The woman’s mother got seriously ill, and because of it she needed constant care. So Maria had to come back home. She was the only child in the family, her father had long been dead, and Maria was the only one to take care of her paralyzed mother. While the woman was in Yugoslavia, Momcilo became a successful businessman.
The spouses were actively writing each other letters, but over time their feelings died down. Thousands of kilometers and different lifestyles affected their relationship. A few years later they finally stopped writing letters.
After a while Maria learned Momchilo had found someone else. There was no point in returning to Australia. So after her mom’s death, the woman stayed in the village.
For more than 50 years, the woman had no news from her husband. It was rumored, that he had become a millionaire, but Maria didn’t believe it. She didn’t like gossips in general.
In 2011 it became known that Momcilo passed away. Maria didn’t even think about claiming his inheritance. But her neighbors wanted to restore justice. They found out that the deceased had bequeathed about a million dollars to his wife!
However, Maria was not particularly impressed by this news. She said, she didn’t need so much money: “Water and firewood for winter is all I need”. Our heroine shared her wealth among her neighbors. They admitted, that in any case money still couldn’t have made her happy. After all, she doesn’t even imagine what she can spend it on. “I am happy to know that Momcilo never forgot about me! I had no hope he would remember me”,- says Maria.
