Mel Brooks, the funny guy behind great movies, just got a special Oscar at the 14th Governors Awards. He’s 97! Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick sang some of his famous songs before he got the award.
Brooks won an Oscar in 1968 for The Producers but sold it. Now, he won’t sell this one. He said it means a lot to him. Growing up, being recognized by his peers was important, and it’s the same in show business.

Before getting the award, Lane and Broderick sang about Brooks being great at everything. They joked about every joke that made you laugh probably started with Mel.
The Academy decided to give Brooks, Angela Bassett, and film editor Carol Littleton the special award in June 2023. Brooks was happy to be alive and recognized after more than 50 years since his last Oscar.

Brooks, who has an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT), joked about choosing show business over being an accountant. He got two more Oscar nominations in 1975.
The award recognizes people for their lifetime achievements and outstanding contributions to movies. Other winners include Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland, Jackie Chan, and Cicely Tyson.
