Margot Robbie showed respect to model Claudia Schiffer by wearing an old Chanel outfit at the AFI Awards Luncheon in Los Angeles. The Barbie actress chose a coral and black crop top with a black Chanel skirt from Chanel’s 1995 spring collection, previously worn by Schiffer. The top had a flower-shaped blue, red, and coral piece of jewelry, and the skirt had a gold chain with Chanel’s logo.
Robbie, 33, attended the event with the film’s co-writer and director Greta Gerwig and her co-star America Ferrera. Gerwig wore a black and white checkered suit, and Ferrera wore a black leather dress.
Robbie often takes inspiration from vintage Barbie outfits for her looks during the Barbie movie press tour. In the 2023 blockbuster, Robbie’s Barbie character also wears vintage Chanel, some of which was modeled by Schiffer in the same 1995 show. The pink Chanel skirt suit and lavender tweed skirt suit worn by Barbie in the film were also worn by Schiffer in 1995. Barbie even borrowed a statement necklace with pearl drops and interlocking Cs, originally worn by Schiffer.
Chanel specially made a hot pink version of the heart-shaped bag from the 1995 show for Robbie’s Barbie character. Robbie shared her excitement about wearing an archival suit with Claudia’s label in a promotional video.
Robbie discovered that Karl Lagerfeld had designed a Barbie collection in the ’90s with Claudia Schiffer during her visit to the Chanel archive in Paris. In the film, one of Lagerfeld’s costumes, worn by both Robbie and Schiffer, became a special nod or “Easter egg.” Costume designer Jacqueline Durran confirmed this interesting detail.
