Tina Fey shared in a talk with PEOPLE that she and Tim Meadows decided to reprise their roles in the new Mean Girls movie, but with one condition—they didn’t want to sing. Fey, 53, explained that they thought it made sense for teachers like Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall to be part of the film. She called Meadows, 62, and they agreed to return as long as singing wasn’t part of their roles.

Fey mentioned it was enjoyable working with Meadows again after almost 20 years since the original Mean Girls movie in 2004. She also expressed excitement about the new cast, including Angourie Rice, Renée Rapp, Anantika, and Bebe Wood, who are taking on the roles made famous by Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert.

Fey highlighted her joy in bringing together a new group of talented actors for the film and praised their charisma. The cast also includes Jon Hamm, Jenna Fischer, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho, and Busy Philipps in various roles. The new Mean Girls movie is a reimagining based on the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation of the original film.
