Five years ago, Jimmy Carter became the oldest-living U.S. president at 94 years and 172 days. He’s still living in his rural Georgia home, setting a high bar for future retired presidents.
On March 22, 2019, Carter became the longest-lived U.S. president, surpassing George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and even John Adams, who lived two centuries ago.

Americans are fascinated by Carter and his wife Rosalynn’s lives after leaving the White House. They returned to their modest home in Plains, Georgia, started a charity, worked with Habitat for Humanity, and stayed active in their local church.
Despite facing health issues like cancer, falls, and hip surgery, Carter remained active, focusing on humanitarian work. His spokesperson mentioned that he and Rosalynn stayed healthy by taking walks and eating well.

However, in February 2023, Carter began receiving hospice care at age 98 due to declining health. Three months later, Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia. Their grandson shared that they were embracing their final days together.
Carter found joy in simple things like watching baseball and spending time with family. In July, they celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary, breaking a record. Unfortunately, in November, Rosalynn passed away at home, surrounded by family.

Carter attended her memorial services but has since been rarely seen in public. However, their decision to enroll in hospice care sparked conversations about end-of-life care benefits.
Today, Carter is 99 years and 173 days old, still defying the odds. As he approaches his centennial milestone, he continues to leave a lasting legacy.
