Meet Costasiella kuroshimae, also known as “salty ocean caterpillar” or “leaf slug”. This adorable creature feeds on algae. With its cute eyes and beautiful tentacles, this creature looks like a cartoon character.
Leaf slug reaches 5mm-1cm in length and can carry out photosynthesis. They receive chloroplasts from algae – a process known as Kleptoplasty. This is the reason, why they are considered slugs running on solar energy. Leaf slugs inhabit the waters near Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
There are 284 different types of Sacoglossa sea slugs around the world. However, only Costasiella kuroshimae has such a charming appearance.
