When Angelica was born on May 6, 2018, she looked really cute. She had a special mark on her face that looked like a heart.
Her mom, Marianna Bowering, said that while most people liked Angelica’s mark, some said mean things about it.
“Somebody online said her face looked like it had been grilled,” Bowering said.
People said hurtful things, calling Angelica names like “hideous” and “defect.” But Angelica’s family stayed strong and wanted her to feel good about herself.
To show her support, Marianna decided to paint the same mark on her own face with makeup.
“I saw a day where people paint hearts on their cheeks to support birthmark awareness, so I decided to do Angelica’s mark,” she said.
Marianna felt sad when people suggested that Angelica’s mark might go away or that she could hide it with makeup. She thought her daughter’s mark was something to be proud of, not something to hide.
She also dressed up Angelica’s mark with glitter to make it sparkle.
Angelica’s parents make sure she’s healthy by taking her for regular check-ups, especially for her eyes.
“Angelica, you’re beautiful just the way you are,” Marianna said.
