Turtles found for the first time in the Galápagos Islands

It is important to take care of this turtles and other endangered species

It is so wonderful to know that that endangered species have a chance to increase in number. Last month, researchers found 10 newly-hatched turtles on the small island of Pinzón. There might be more turtles, but their small size makes it difficult to find them. This is a proof, that giant turtles are able to reproduce in the wild.

Whales and invasive rats eliminated this species during 17th-18th centuries. Local authorities tried to weed out black rats from the island and in 2012 it was declared free from invasive rats.

Since 1959 when Galapagos National Park was created, the population of these turtles has increased up to 500.

It is important to take care of this turtles and other endangered species.
