Lindsay and her family made an amazing discovery when they found a large World War II bunker in their garden. They bought a house and heard a hollow sound under the scullery floor. They investigated and found a hidden metal hatch under a cupboard.
Opening the hatch, they found a tunnel leading about 100 meters underground. It took them to a big bunker in their backyard. The tunnel had a long yellow electrical cable running along the bottom.
Inside the bunker, they found old glass jars of rum and whiskey from 1945. They also found a rusty suitcase locked with a padlock. Inside were secret documents from 1945 about Allied Navy submarines. These could have been important in World War II.
They also discovered a room with clothes, bed linens, and weapon holsters. As they climbed a ladder to an observation tower, they found anti-aircraft guns, binoculars, and documents, all in great condition because the rooms had no oxygen or light.
Realizing the historical importance of the discovery, Lindsay’s family turned most of the bunker into a museum. It now gets up to a million visitors each year. The museum teaches people about what happened during World War II beneath common houses. Lindsay believes understanding the past is important for looking toward the future.
