Why do boys wear blue and girls pink?

The clear color separation is nothing but a trick of marketers

When preparing a dowry for a future baby, we usually adhere to the generally accepted rule. Namely: pink is for girls, and blue is for boys.

But has it always been so accepted?

In the old days, it was believed that the only color suitable for babies and young children was white. Why? It’s simple. This was explained by the most common considerations of practicality. Everyone knows that children often get their clothes dirty. And the old methods of washing were very harsh. Clothes were boiled with caustic substances, which no dye of those times could withstand.

Later, more stable dyes for fabrics appeared and children began to be dressed in color. By the way, initially it was the opposite – pink was intended for boys. All because it was considered a kind of red – the color of energy and strength. And the girls were instructed to wear a more delicate color – sky blue.

At the end of the 19th century, such a division was no longer put. Children of both gender were dressed in both pink and blue.

And closer to the 30s of the last century, the rules changed. Now blue became considered a “boy’s” color, and pink became a “girl’s” color. Finally, this state of affairs strengthened after the Second World War. Some attribute this to the increased popularity of blue suits in the “marine” style and the introduction of school uniforms. It was necessary to make blue a more serious “male” color.

As for pink, marketing strategies of various companies played a significant role. Probably all this was aimed at increasing sales, encouraging customers to update their wardrobe in a “girly” color. And what to talk about if the world’s best-selling Barbie doll lives in a pink house and wears everything pink!

So it is quite possible that a clear color separation is nothing but a trick of marketers. However, the trend has taken root and continues to this day.
