“Exploring ‘Serenity'”: A Journey into Portland’s Tiny House Community

In April 2015, we went to Simply Home Community in Portland, Oregon, to film a tour of Lina Menard’s Tiny Home and a walk-through of the tiny house community with member Tony Diethelm. Recently we went back to Portland and visited Simply Home Community again. This time we toured Karin Parramore’s Tiny House – “Serenity.”

Karin went to medical school and found out she couldn’t afford a normal-sized home in Portland without getting into debt. After seeing a news feature on Jay Shafer’s tiny home, she decided to build her own tiny home to live without debt. While building, Karin felt empowered by the act, which confirmed her decision.

Karin named her tiny home “Serenity” after the starship on her favorite TV show, “Firefly.” She also feels the definition of “Serenity” matches the calm and peaceful feeling she wanted for her home.

FEATURES OF SERENITY TINY HOME:

– A door for her cat & small windows for pets

– Homemade composting toilet

– A futon downstairs for guests to sleep on

– Three skylights

– A heater

– Flooring made of cork

– Custom-made doors

Karin’s tiny home is currently in a backyard community in Portland, along with two other tiny homes. Karin takes care of the garden in the community. This summer they grew more than enough fruit and greens to feed all seven community members!

Simply Home Community is about to celebrate their one year anniversary. We want to congratulate Karin, Tony, Lina, and the other community members for creating a sustainable tiny house community model.
