Flynn McGarry, who is now 25 years old, has been impressing people with his cooking skills since he was very young. At 19, he became the owner of Gem, a creative restaurant in downtown New York. Before that, he even ran a pop-up restaurant called Eureka in his family’s dining room when he was in middle school. Now, Flynn is planning a new restaurant in New York, but in the meantime, he’s turning Gem into a wine bar.
To give Gem a new look without spending too much money, Flynn decided to do the designing and much of the work himself. He learned a lot about cooking from famous cookbooks like those from Noma and The French Laundry, and he started developing his own sense of design from them too.
During two busy weeks in late August, Flynn and two friends transformed Gem into Gem Wine. They used simple but effective ideas to make the place look great. Here are some of those ideas:
1. Make the outside of your place look inviting. Flynn painted the outside of Gem Wine yellow with striped awnings and a hand-painted sign. He also put vintage French school stools outside.
2. Design the room around a few key things you love. Flynn used a rope fish he found at a flea market, some paintings from a friend, and vintage ship models as inspiration for the new look of Gem Wine.
3. Teach yourself new skills. Flynn learned how to do carpentry work when he needed shelves for his restaurant. He’s been getting better at it over time by learning from others and practicing.
4. Get your friends involved. Flynn’s restaurant is filled with artwork and designs made by his creative friends. They helped him bring his vision to life.
5. Use simple materials creatively. Flynn used wooden rails and burlap to cover the windows, letting in light while keeping privacy.
6. Mix and match furniture for an interesting look. Flynn’s chairs are all different but look good together, giving the place character.
7. Use dried flowers for decoration. They add life to the room without needing much maintenance.
8. Art doesn’t have to be big to make an impact. Flynn commissioned small paintings to add color and interest to the room.
Overall, Flynn and his friends used creativity and resourcefulness to give Gem Wine a fresh new look without breaking the bank.
