I’m telling you the story about how I almost ended up in a wrong family.
I was born in the late 80s. In the middle of February, my mother had labor pains, dad took her to hospital. 14 hours later I was born. I was the fifth daughter of my wonderful parents. Did my parents want a boy? No idea! Now they say that after the third girl, they both didn’t care what their next child would be, but I think that they are lying a little, especially dad.
By coincidence, a woman from a mountain village was lying in the ward with my mother. This woman gave birth to her 11th son that time. Imagine a whole football team!? Apparently, her husband didn’t take it as easy as my father. As the woman told my mom, before the labor, her husband had told her: “You will give birth until a girl is born!”. Everyone in the ward took this for a joke, laughed and forgot about it. But this woman, Aigul, was not kidding! Mom says she was crying all the time, didn’t want to feed her child. She said she didn’t have enough milk. Everyone in the ward fed the boy in turn.
One day my mom was walking along the corridor, and Aigul was coming toward her. Suddenly, she got on her knees in front of my mom and said: “Let’s change! You will have a boy, and I’ll have a daughter!”.
My mum, surely, said she would never give her child to anyone. But Aigul didn’t let her go, cried, begged. Mom tried to calm her down. The midwife saw this scene and told my mother to go to the ward.
Two days passed, they brought all the children for feeding. The director called my mother to check some papers for discharge. She came back to the ward and saw a scene: Aigul was feeding me, and her son was lying next to my mom’s bed and crying. Of course, my mom got scared. She took me away and ran around until we were discharged. She asked the nurses to check if everything was fine with me.
In future, my father would often joke around saying: “Were you living with 11 brothers in a mountain village, you wouldn’t talk back so much!”
My mom is a brunette, and Aigul thought no one would notice the difference. I grew up with platinum blonde hair. I imagine what kind of scandal her strict husband would have arranged for her when a blue-eyed girl with blonde hair appeared in the family.
