When Deb and Ron retired, life didn’t slow down. Their daughter Amanda had two sons, and they loved being full-time grandparents. They all lived in Pennsylvania, close to each other, and every day was filled with the joy of their grandkids.

But things changed when Amanda and her husband moved to Birmingham, Alabama, for work. The distance made it hard for Deb and Ron to see their grandchildren regularly. Video calls became the new way to stay connected, but it wasn’t the same.

To be closer to their family, Deb and Ron decided to move to Alabama. They found a property by Smith Lake and initially set up their motorhome. However, a storm showed them they needed something more stable. So, they came up with the idea of turning a shipping container into a tiny home.

With the help of Alabama Tiny Homes, they transformed a shipping container into a cozy 480-square-foot home. The project cost $120,000 and included a large window overlooking the lake, a full-size refrigerator, and a washer and dryer.

Amanda also decided to build her own tiny home on the property. Her 320-square-foot home, made from a 20-foot container, had bunk beds for the kids, a Murphy bed for herself, and a full bathroom. And it was just steps away from her parents’ home.
The construction had its challenges, and it took about a year to complete due to delays in getting the containers. But the family was patient, knowing the end result would be worth it. The homes were crafted with attention to detail, making the wait worthwhile.

Now, the family enjoys their time together on Smith Lake. Deb and Ron’s home captures beautiful sunsets, and Amanda’s home provides a perfect retreat for her and her children.

These tiny homes have brought the family closer, creating a lakeside sanctuary filled with everyday memories. The practical and picturesque homes have redefined their idea of living well.
Amanda emphasized the importance of being together, especially as the kids grow older. She mentioned that time is limited, so it’s essential to make the most of it.
