“Irresponsible father”: why Elon Mask’s son changed his gender

What is the richest man in the world and the father of seven children hiding?

When your father is the richest man, who is soon going to become the first ever trillionaire, many will understand the desire to stay close to him. Only not Elon Musk’s 18-year-old son Xavier. He publicly announced his decision to become a woman and give up his surname Musk. Apparently, he wanted to lose all the connection with the 50-year-old founder of Tesla and SpaceX.

On June 24, the court considered Xavier Mask’s petition and granted it. From here on, the transgender teenager – one of the seven children of Elon Musk and five from his first wife Justine Musk – carries the name Vivian Jenna Wilson. Earlier, she submitted a request to change her name in accordance with her new gender identity. And the reason was – “she no longer lives with her biological father and does not want to be anyhow connected to him”.

For the American press, closely watching the life of Musk, the act of the magnate’s child became a sensation. The new gender identity and the change of the official name is the first public statement of Mask and Wilson’s child. Up to this point, his ex-wife was living in shadows. According to The Independent, this move was a response to transphobic comments by Musk in recent months. One of them is his tweet “Pronouns suck”, which the billionaire tweeted in 2020. However, he claims he supports LGBT, and that Tesla is one of the best workplaces for the LGBT community.

Elon Musk and His Women

Elon Musk has 7 children – Nevada Alexander, Griffin, Xavier, Damian, Saxon, X Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sideræl. Five of them are from the marriage with the Canadian writer Justine Wilson. The last two are from pop-star Grimes. Musk broke up with the latter too. The founder of Tesla and the sci-fi writer met at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. They got married in 2000. Their first child died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at the age of 10 weeks. After this, they conceived twins Griffin and Xavier in 2004. Later, in 2006, the had triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, with the help of IVF. Xavier was named after Professor Xavier from the Marvel comics X-Men.

Musk and Wilson divorced in 2008. They shared custody of all five children who grew up without much attention of the media. The tabloids could only find a few photos of the family together, where the twins were about 5 years old.

“The custody over our children is divided equally. I spend almost all my free time from work with my boys. They are the love of my life”, wrote Musk in an article in Business Insider (2010).

At the same time, Wilson described herself in an essay in Marie Claire as an “aspiring wife” and spoke about her anger over her ex-husband’s engagement to British actress Talulah Riley only 6 weeks after the divorce.

She mentioned, that Musk declared himself the “Alpha” in their relationship, and treated her like one of his employees.

“If you were my employee, I would fire you”, Wilson quoted Musk’s words.

According to the woman, when their eldest son Nevada died suddenly in 2002, Musk regarded her grief as “emotional manipulation” and refused to talk about the child. Although they have 5 children together, Justine believes, that her ex-husband perceived her as nothing more than a “trophy wife”. After the divorce, Wilson communicated with Musk through his assistant.

Musk’s second wife 36-year-old Riley described Elon as a devoted father, who sees his children 4 times a week.

“He tries to come home earlier to have a dinner with me and the kids. And maybe to play some videogames with the boys”, she wrote in the book about Musk.

After breaking up with Riley in 2016, Musk dated 36-year-old Amber Heard. The actress posted photos on social media, where she is playing with his children. Then the billionaire had a long-term relationship with Grimes, who gave birth to two of his children. Musk already calls his baby X Æ A-12 (abbr. X) his protégé and shows him on his lap during video calls.

In 2020, the entrepreneur told New York Times, he considered himself an “irresponsible father to his younger children”. He hopes he will be more involved in their lives when they grow up.

“When I get a trip to China for Tesla, I will take the kids with me. We’ll go to see the Great Wall of China, will take a high-speed rail from Beijing to Xi’an and see the terracotta warriors”, told Musk in an interview.

Neither the parents, nor Vivian herself commented on the news about her gender and name change. She didn’t even mention weather she would get financial support from her father in future. However, the New York Post believes that the wording of the document filed by Vivian in a Los Angeles court shows the teenager’s negative attitude to communicating with his father.

Loud Father with Mixed Views

Elon Musk has spoken publicly about transsexuals more than once, creating a massive discussion around his messages. For instance, he admitted that he supported trans, but named pronouns an “esthetic nightmare”.

American Press believes, this is the main reason of Xavier’s act. In December, 2020, the billionaire was criticized for sharing a meme, that mocked people putting “he/his” in their bio on social networks. Chasten Buttigieg – the husband of the US secretary of transportation Pete Buttigieg – was one of the critics. In response to Musk’s retweet, he wrote that he was ready to once again go over the difficult topic of transgender people with Elon.

Since then, Musk has expressed support for the Republican Party, whose promises include restricting transgender rights in some U.S. states, and said he was a fan of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. It was he to be condemned by the LGBTQ community for the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which prohibits discussion of gender identity and homosexuality in schools.

However, later Musk insisted that he stood for LGBT rights, referring to Tesla as the best workplace for community supporters.

“We are simultaneously told that there are no gender differences and that gender differences are so deep that the only option is irreversible surgical intervention. Maybe someone wiser that me can explain this dichotomy?”, wrote Musk on June 11.

An hour later, he tweeted: “The world will be a better place if we are all less judgmental”. This is probably the only thing in which the billionaire’s transgender daughter might agree with her father.
